A steady stream of people walked through the doors of the Seniors' Drop In Centre, to vote in Penticton's byelection Saturday morning.
Around 15 people were there at 8 a.m. when the polling station opened, and at times there were line-ups stretching across the parking lot.
"We are excited. It's a great day, with a full range of people showing up," said Simone Blais, the city's communications officer, as she manned a table at the station. "We expect the morning to be the busiest time of the day."
Blais said days leading up to the by-election, to elect the mayor and one councillor for the city council, have been good as well, with 793 people voting in the advance polls.
Most residents said they were there because it's their duty to vote.
"I feel like you can't complain, if you don't get out and vote," said Greig Goldstone. "I also know one of the candidates, who is running for mayor."
Don Vennard said he was voting, because he is interested in what goes on in the city.
"I want the right people in there to run it," he said.
Norma Kasper shared that sentiment.
"I am here just to try and get the person we want in to represent us," she said. "And it is lovely to see everyone out here today voting."
The candidates are Garry Litke, Vic Powell and Brian Henningson for mayor. Candidates running for the council seat are Andre Martin, Kevin Andrews, Patrick Buchanan, Lynn Kelsey and Katie Robinson.
The polling station at the drop-in centre at 2965 S. Main St., closes at 8 p.m., tonight.
Castanet will have the results as soon as they become available tonight.
