Neighbour saves house
Sep 3, 2013 / 4:09 pm
The quick actions of a neighbour helped save a home from burning in West Bench Sunday morning.
Daniel Peron saw smoke, called 911 and then went to work with a garden hose fighting the fire on the deck. Peron did not know who owned the home.
"I saw it and just did what I had to do," he said.
Peron declined to comment further on his actions.
But Dave and Vreny Swanson, who have lived in the home on Veteran Drive since 1972, said they appreciated his efforts.
"Our whole place would have been a shambles without this," said Dave Swanson. "So we are very grateful."
Vreny said they left for church around 8:40 a.m. Sunday and didn't come home until after lunch.
Everything appeared fine, until they looked through their patio door and saw the burned deck.
They asked other neighbours if they saw anything, then noticed there was a card from the fire department asking them to call.
They learned, Peron, who was visiting and helping out in a nearby vineyard, noticed the smoke and realized the deck was burning when he looked through his binoculars.
"He called the fire department, then came over and started putting out the fire with our garden hose, before the fire department showed up," said Vreny. "He is like an angel. Thank goodness he saw it and came."
Penticton Fire Chief Wayne Williams said the firefighters extinguished the blaze when they arrived on scene.
"It was just confined to the patio because of him calling 911 right away and using the hose," he said.
Williams said in addition to the burned deck, there was some slight smoke damage to the interior of the home.
On Tuesday, the Swanson's waited to see what the damage would end up costing them.
They are not entirely sure what caused the blaze, but the investigation is focused on a possible electrical short in an outdoor extension cord.
