Silt fences placed along Collin's Gulch
Sep 2, 2013 / 11:35 am
On Saturday August 31 and Sunday, September 1, work was completed by technical experts of Quantum Murray LP and Coalmont Energy Corp. employees in establishing silt abatement works in two locations along Collin’s Gulch in the Similkameen to determine the most effective and appropriate methods of cleaning up the deposited silt material.
According to Keith Meldrum, the spokesman for Coalmont Energy Corp., which operates the Basin Coal Mine above Coalmont, a small tailings spill of approximately 6,500 gallons, breached an emergency containment pond and made its way to Collin's Gulch and eventually, the Tulameen River.
Work consisted of the establishment of two temporary silt dams as well as the placement of silt fencing in four locations along Collin’s Gulch to help ensure no further silt can reach the Tulameen River. This work was reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Environment prior to commencement.
Polaris Applied Science Inc. of Kirkland WA, a leading firm in spill response, environmental assessment, and remediation is en route to the site to complete the Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Techniques (SCAT) work; Polaris will be on site Tuesday, September 3.
The results of the assessment will be reviewed by the Ministry of Environment in conjunction with the preliminary results of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for approval of an effective and comprehensive clean-up plan.
The assessments and the development of the plan must be completed and submitted to the Ministry of Environment for approval no later than September 8.
