Penticton Legion robbed again
Aug 20, 2013 / 5:00 am
For the second time in less than a year, money has been stolen from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 40 in Penticton.
The office manager arrived early Monday morning, only to find the door to the main office broken and money taken from a drop box on the back of the door.
"They basically took money taken in by the legion over the whole weekend, probably close to $2,000," said legion president Murray Grandy.
Grandy said he believes the overnight theft is an inside job, because there was no damage to the front door. When he left with the bartender at around 6 p.m. Sunday, the building was entirely locked up.
The main damage was to a grill on the lower part of the office door, which was pulled apart so the thief could access the drop box.
"It had to be someone who cased the place and noticed there was a grill there," said Grandy.
RCMP officers came by early Monday to take fingerprints, and the investigation is ongoing, according to Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth.
In January, $1,200 was taken from the bar safe at the legion.
Grandy said that too was probably an inside job, but no one was arrested and the RCMP are no longer investigating that incident.
The second break in comes in a year when the legion has struggled financially and considered selling their building.
"This is another hardship in a difficult year for the legion," said Grandy.
