No water in Ok Falls

UPDATE 11:30 A.M.

Ken Peters, water operator for the Okanagan Falls Irrigation District, says the water line broke this morning around 6:30 a.m. at the corner of 10th and Maple.

He says the more than likely cause of the break was due to age, with the line being at least 30 to 40 years old.

Sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. the water was turned off to the whole town, because of the broken line.

Peters says they hope to have the break fixed by 1 or 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Residents are warned that when the water does return they will have to boil it for a few days as the line is being depressurized, and they will have to flush it.

Neighbour Florian Nunes tells Castanet he got up this morning and saw water running in the street and but there was no water running out of his taps.

"A couple of people are saying no water for their coffee," he says. "But I'm not worried, I'm sure they will fix it and that will be it."

Another neighbour, Harold, says he has a dish pan of water in his sink and is making do.

According to School District 53, Okanagan Falls Elementary School is open, but parents have the option to take students home if they wish. The district has supplied water to the school.

There is a major water line break on 10th and Maple Street in the lower zone of the District.

The District says that the lower zone will be without water for most of today, Friday October 10, 2014.

Once the repair is complete the District will be flushing and disinfecting and the lower zone will be on a Boil Water Advisory.

The District apologizes for any inconvenience.
