Crack house concerns residents

Residents with concerns about a run-down rooming house on Penticton's Winnipeg Street now have a place to vent.

A Facebook page titled "Shut Down the Crack House" has been created to open up discussion regarding the Winnipeg Manor.

"I am glad this Facebook page has been started so there is discussion," said a resident who did not wish to be identified. "Something needs to happen, because people are getting hurt in there."

Others who live in the neighbourhood said they have long had to live with issues including petty crime, obvious drug dealing and even people showing up at their door in distress.

One man who lived there for a time said the living conditions are horrible and there is always violence.

Actual comments on the Facebook page range from yanking the owner's business permit, to concerns about vehicles coming and going and drug dealing and more activity at this location since a former flop house on Ellis Street burned down.

Traffic has also doubled, say some, since the closing of the Three Gables apartments above the cold beer and wine store.

The house long ago served as the Anglican Church manse, according to people who live in the neighbourhood, and some posting messages say it is sad to see this lovely old home deteriorate.

Mayor Garry Litke said the city dealt with safety issues at the location a few years ago, but the issue is now crime related and has been turned over to the RCMP.

There was no one with the Penticton RCMP available to comment on the matter on Friday.
