Council's Boonstock verdict

The Penticton council is awaiting reports from the RCMP and Interior Health before commenting further on the Boonstock Music and Arts Festival.

But at Tuesday's meeting, they were quick to thank the RCMP, city staff and emergency services for their hard work during the long weekend event, held on Penticton Indian Band locatee land.

"I am reserving comments on the recent weekend activities," said Councillor Katie Robinson. "But there was some exceptional work done."

Mayor Garry Litke described the efforts of the RCMP and emergency services as service above and beyond the call of duty to keep participants safe.

But during later questioning by the media, regarding which council members actually attended the festival, Robinson responded with this comment.

"I'm not a head banging druggie, so I was not interested in it whatsoever," she said.

Her response was met with looks of disbelief and gasps from those sitting in the gallery.

Robinson has been outspoken regarding the festival, particularly on security issues.

On Wednesday afternoon, Robinson issued this statement on her comment:

"To whom it may concern, I would like to take the opportunity to apologize for a statement I made at the end of last night's council meeting.

As concerned as I am about public safety, the comment about Boonstock attendees was made without sufficient consideration for all the people who attended.

I recognize that there are many music enthusiasts of all ages from the community and visitors alike who participated in the festival, enjoyed the event and were positive, peaceful and here to experience  live music.

The comments were out of character for me, and it was not my intention to offend all those who attended the festival."
