Death at Boonstock

RCMP confirm a 24-year-old woman from Leduc, died from a suspected drug overdose Saturday morning at 1 a.m.A young woman from Alberta has died at the Boonstock Music Festival.

The woman died after being taken to hospital from the event grounds.

Upon further investigation, police discovered that two other people were in critical condition at the hospital as a result of drug over doses. Castanet has learned over a dozen others were also transported to hospital for less serious drug related issues.

Grace Kucey, with Interior Health, said there were 17 confirmed hospital transfers from the site between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.

Penticton RCMP fear there may be further overdose deaths if attendees do not take steps to safeguard their own health.

Police are asking all Boonstock attendees to refrain from ingesting unknown substances and to ensure that they remain hydrated in the hot, dry, dusty conditions of the event grounds.

Dehydration greatly increases the risks associated to overdose by alcohol or drugs, as does mixing drugs with alcohol.

The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of the family. The Penticton RCMP continue to assist the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.
