Anniv. of film set in Naramata

The 25 member wineries of the Naramata Bench Wineries Association are circling their trucks on Sept. 13 for the annual tailgate party.

The event will take place at Poplar Grove Winery from 6:30 to 9 PM.

Attendees will enjoy wines from 25 renowned wineries, local cuisine, live 50’s music and a celebration of the making of the Naramata film “My American Cousin,” which was shot in September 1984 by writer/director Sandy Wilson.

"I have been going to the Tailgate Party for years now – it’s a great party and it's all about home grown Okanagan wines.  "My American Cousin" is a home grown  Okanagan movie and this year's very special because the tailgate party will be an exciting reason to get the gang together and see all the locals who were in the movie or inspired the movie or worked on the movie or just  kinda love the movie, cause movies and wine make good companions!," said Wilson.

Wilson was born and raised in Naramata, and she and some of the original cast and crew will be at the party.

She was prompted to make the movie, she says, because in the summer of 1982, she heard Johnny Horton sing "The Battle of New Orleans," and remembered the golden summer her American cousin showed up in a big fancy car and that song was a big hit.

"Butch would turn it up loud and my dad would get really mad and say "Turn that damn noise off." And I thought, gee that would make a great movie! Boys and girls and rock and roll, in the Okanagan orchards and teen town dances."

Attendees will revisit the summer of 1959 in Naramata, the setting for the film. They are invited to wear 1950's outfits, and there will be prizes for the best and most authentic ones.

Seven chefs from Naramata Bench restaurants will create a menu of gourmet offerings featuring a wide selection of Ocean Wise™ seafood supplied through Codfathers Seafood Market (Codfathers Seafood Market) and game meats supplied by North Okanagan Game Meats.

The 25 Naramata Bench Wineries Association members pouring are: Kettle Valley Winery, Therapy Vineyards, Serendipity Winery, Van Westen Vineyards, Elephant Island Orchard Wines, Lake Breeze Vineyards, Lang Vineyards, Terravista Vineyards, Moraine Estate Winery, Bench 1775 Winery, Black Widow Winery, Laughing Stock Vineyards, 3 Mile Estate Winery, Howling Bluff Estate Winery, Hillside Winery & Bistro, D'Angelo Estate Winery, Red Rooster Winery, La Frenz Winery, Poplar Grove Winery, Monster Vineyards, Perseus Winery, Tightrope Winery, Misconduct Wine Co., Deep Roots Winery and Upper Bench Estate Winery.
