Pub goes up in flames

1:50 p.m. update:

Keremeos residents and business owners are devastated after a fire tore through an old building in downtown Keremeos Monday morning.

"This is the worst thing that could happen," said Bill Irvine, who owns the building. " We have invested our lives in this for the last 10 years."

There were three businesses in the building, including the Red Bridge Pub, 7th Street Diner and a liquor store. Around 20 employees worked in the businesses.

"It's a historic building, over 100 years old, so to see it burn is just devastating, " said resident Hanna Skytte, who went to the scene, after seeing smoke."

Resident Wendy Tome said she knows people who worked there, and it is very, very sad.
Several businesses in the downtown were closed for the day.

Firefighters were still on scene in the afternoon, and there were many onlookers at the location.

The building was demolished. While some said there was lightning in the area at the time, the cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
