Rockslide - rescuer talks

By Trevor Rockliffe

7 p.m. update: A witness to the slide said the vehicle that was hit by the rocks had two occupants.

The driver received fewer injuries than the passenger, but was still brought to hospital with lacerations on his head and possibly a broken ankle.

Traffic is flowing more steadily now both directions at the rockslide.

Cleanup has been underway for a couple of hours, but the DriveBC website indicates a lane closure remains in effect.

3:15 p.m. update: Cleanup has begun on the rockslide north of Summerland.

Traffic is still moving slowly in both directions.

1 p.m. update: Traffic is again moving past the rockslide south of Peachland, but due to the traffic volume it could add an extra hour to the drive.

11:50 a.m.: A rockslide south of Peachland has forced the closure of Hwy. 97 (both directions) between Peachland and Summerland.

The rocks collided with a vehicle and at least one person was injured.

The airbags were deployed on the vehicle that was hit and a woman in the passenger seat had head lacerations. She was taken away in an ambulance.

We will have more details as they become available.

If you witnessed the slide, or if you are stuck in traffic, send info, video and photos to [email protected].
