Torched van

Smoke from a burning mini-van darkened the skies above the west side of Osoyoos Friday afternoon as what police believe may be a stolen vehicle went up in flames.

The Osoyoos Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene quickly to douse the blaze, which began around 3 p.m. above the affluent enclave of Dividend Ridge on the town’s West Bench.

Osoyoos RCMP Cpl. Jason Bayda told Castanet he suspects the vehicle was stolen and then dumped and torched to destroy evidence. He said police won’t know for certain until the vehicle, an older, white mini-van, is identified through VIN numbers.

If it does turn out to be stolen, it will be the second one in a week. Another stolen car was dumped and burned in an orchard north of Osoyoos earlier this week, said Bayda.
