Crossing border with cocaine

A Mexican National has been arrested after trying to smuggle bricks of cocaine across the border earlier this year.

According to Cpl. Laurie White of the RCMP, Andy Garcia-Macias was arrested shortly after he and another man crossed the border from the United States into Canada, near the Boot Lake area east of Oroville/Osoyoos Lake.

Garcia-Macias was found carrying a backpack with nine bricks of cocaine, weighing approximately nine kilograms. The second man had fled back to the United States and was arrested by United States Border Patrol.

At the time, he had nothing in his possession, but a search of the area in Canada found a second backpack containing an additional eight kilos of cocaine.

Garcia-Macias has entered a guilty plea and sentencing will take place May 26, 2014.
