The city of Penticton announced Monday that Bill Bidlake and Doug MacMillan will lead the 2016 BC Winter Games Organizing Committee for the city.
Mayor Garry Litke said after a brainstorming session, their names were the first to come up on the board.
"Both individuals are very passionate and community minded, so they are a great fit," said Litke. "When I approached them, not only did they say yes, but also when can we start. There was a great deal of enthusiasm."
Bidlake will serve as the president of the organizing committee and MacMillan will be vice president.
Bidlake retired as principal of Penticton Secondary School after a 35-year-career in teaching and administration.
He has remained committed to local students by serving as a director for the Penticton Secondary Scholarship and Bursary Foundation.
MacMillan has owned the Penticton Canadian Tire, a business that fully supports youth sports, activity and community with charitable contributions. He was instrumental in fundraising for sports recreation centres in the past communities he lived in.
The two are now tasked with the job of forming the committee. Once the process is complete, information will be provided to the community on how they can take part.
"We're so excited about the event and involving the community in such a great celebration of sport," said Bidlake. It should be a lot of fun. Let the Games begin!"
