Unique bench honours Paton

Plans are falling into place for a unique park bench to be installed at Penticton's Rotary Park in the months ahead.

City council, this week,  approved a donation of the bench by the Penticton Historic Automobile Society, honouring the Peach City Beach Cruise event and its late founder Ken Paton.

"I think Ken Paton has done so much for the city," said Councillor John Vassilaki. "He brought a car show to Penticton that brings in thousands of people and brings up the economy 10 fold."

Ken Lakusta, one of the directors of the beach cruise, said they brought the matter to council to get approval for the bench, its location and design. The society is handling all the costs.

A committee hashed around quite a few different designs before coming up with one that works best, a bench replicating a car seat and door.

"It seemed to be the most logical, because it has to do with cars," said Lakusta.

The proposed location for the new bench is adjacent to the sidewalk at the park, facing Lakeshore Drive.

The next step according to Lakusta, will be to take it to the designer to start production.

The board of directors intend to have the bench installed by early June, prior to the annual beach cruise event, scheduled for June 20 to 22.
