Teen dies in fiery crash

UPDATE 2:15 PM

On Feb 19, just after 6pm The Oliver RCMP and RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services attended a single vehicle motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 97 at Road 13 near Oliver. 

The collision involved a Ford pick up truck that had collided with a utility pole and engulfed into flames on impact.

The-19- year old female driver and lone occupant was rushed to South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver by Ambulance but was deceased upon arrival.

The teen has been identified as Marissa Mae Louie

Road and weather conditions were good with roads bare and dry. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.
 
Power was disrupted to homes in the area but FORTIS was on scene to restore power once the police were complete in their investigation.
 
The RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services and BC Coroners Services are investigation the collision and will not be releasing the name of the deceased. Next of Kin has been notified. The deceased is a local resident to Oliver.


7 a.m. update: Highway 97 is now open. A temporary pole is in place and the accident scene is clear.


6 a.m. update: DriveBC is still reporting Hwy. 97 closed south of Oliver.

Initial reports say at least two vehicles collided, sending both off of Hwy. 97 Wednesday night.

A white pick-up truck crashed into a fence around an orchard bursting into flames.

Another vehicle smashed into a power pole, knocking it over, sending live wires across the highway.

More details to follow.


UPDATE 10:15 P.M.

As of 10 p.m. DriveBC says they hope to have the highway reopened between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Hydro lines are also down after one of the vehicles took down a power pole.

Reports are coming in that a person was removed with critical burns and was rushed to hospital. There is no official confirmation of this from emergency crews or the RCMP.

A detour is available via Road 9 and Road 18.
