RDOS locations to recycle trees, lights
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen is offering several locations to recycle Christmas trees.
All landfills in the regional district will accept clean natural Christmas trees, free of tinsel, fake snow, ornaments and lighting.
Landfills can also accept, free of charge, up to 500 kg. per load of yard or clean wood waste.
The trees will be chipped and given new life as animal bedding or compost.
Landfills within the district are located at Campbell Mountain in Penticton, Summerland, Osoyoos, Oliver, Princeton, Keremeos and Okanagan Falls.
These communities in the RDOS offer Christmas tree collection programs.
District of Summerland residents can call the Fire Hall at (250) 494-7211, Ext. 3 or email [email protected] to request collection of their Christmas trees.
Oliver residents can drop off trees at the south gate of the Oliver Public Works yard at 5971 Sawmill Road. This service will run until Friday, Jan. 3. Collection of trees is through the local Air Cadets.
Osoyoos residents can drop off trees adjacent to the washroom at Kinsmen Park or at the northwest corner of the parking lot below Sun Bowl Arena sign until Friday, Jan. 10.
In Naramata, trees will be collected the week of Jan. 13, and trees should be cleaned of all tinsel and ornaments and placed at the curb side.
Call Craig Henderson at (250) 496-5222 to request tree pick-up.
The RDOS does not recommend burning trees, as they are moist and create strong smoke.
Recycling programs also exist across the RDOS for all lighting equipment and bulbs.
