Trial slated for Oliver bombing case
There will not be a preliminary inquiry in the case of the young man allegedly involved in a bombing that took place in Oliver.
The inquiry for 23-year-old Eric Daoust was waived in a Penticton courtroom on Monday and the case instead will go straight to Supreme Court, for trial by judge alone.
A bail hearing for Daoust, who is facing a charge of destroying or damaging property (in this case a motor vehicle), took place in early December, and he was released on $2,000 bail. The charge also includes placing or throwing an explosive substance.
Daoust's brother, Stephan Daoust, 19, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years probation in December for his involvement in the bombing, and a separate incident of bear spraying at the same Oliver home.
According to Crown counsel Deb Drissell at an earlier court appearance, the bombing took place at 2 a.m. on Aug. 11, when Stephan Daoust placed the homemade bomb under the right rear tire of a vehicle parked behind the home on Earle Crescent, lit the wick and then made his escape.
It was revealed that his reason for placing the bomb at this particular location was due to a longstanding dispute with the young man who lives in the home, along with his grandmother.
A date for the Supreme Court trial for Eric Daoust is slated to be set on Jan. 6, 2014.
