Mount Baldy will not open for Christmas

An update on the 2013-2014 ski season at Mount Baldy was posted on the ski area's website late this week.

In a letter by Brent Baker, president, The Mt. Baldy Companies, he states "We have been working ceaselessly to overcome the challenges immediately before us in order to get open for the season.

While we do intend to open this season, it pains us deeply to announce that we will definitely not be able to fund and complete our maintenance and certifications on the lifts in time to open for the traditional Christmas holiday.

We continue to work on our financing and while we can't guarantee it, we expect to be open in January and will operate, conditions permitting, into April.

We have not conducted a season pass campaign to date, as we do not wish to take any money from anyone until we see a clear and reliable path to enabling operation through to the end of the season.

We have been amazed at and remain eternally grateful for the support and goodwill that everyone has shown for the ski area.

This has been a difficult time for everyone from day skiers to cabin owners, staff and stakeholders.

However, if we all hold on to a positive attitude, we believe it will just make the sliding all the more enjoyable once the bull wheels start turning."

Additional facts related to financing, maintenance and staffing are available on the Mount Baldy website, www.skibaldy.com.

Mountain manager Matt Koenig reiterated it all depends on when the money comes in.

"If that does happen, staff will work hard to get the mountain open," he said. "I am still hopeful, we are all just waiting until things get resolved."

Cabin holders at the South Okanagan ski area first realized something was wrong when season passes did not go on sale in August.

Then in September and October, when maintenance is typically done on the chairlifts, nothing happened.

People with a strong attachment to the community have tried to maintain a positive attitude throughout.

Cabin holders recently met to organize a calendar of events for people in the Baldy area, in the event the ski area didn't open for the season.
