Take a look at Penticton's new theatre

The effort to inject new life into the old Penmar Theatre on Martin Street, received a financial boost Monday night.

The Penticton council allocated $125,000 from the Amenity Contribution Capital Reserve Fund for use by the Penmar Community Arts Society for the development of a performing arts centre in the theatre.

"We are really excited," said Kerri Milton, the secretary for the nonprofit. "WIth the building fully empty, we are now ready to move forward."

The funding going to the society comes from density bonuses contributed by developers, according to Mayor Garry Litke.

It is not tax money, rather a fund that was created to provide community amenities.

Litke said he supports the society because there is a need in the community for performing arts space.

"We don't have enough stages and there's a pent up demand for a performing arts amenity in this city," he said. "There is also a good business plan and a motivated group of people who want to do this, so it is worthwhile to support."

Milton said the $125,000 will be used toward seats, projector equipment and sound curtains.

The nonprofit already has three projectors coming from Kelowna and they will order seats early in the new year.

Demolition and renovations will commence at the end of January.

When it opens as the Penmar Community Arts Theatre, it will feature live music and theatre performances, ethnic films, documentaries and second run movies.

"Everything is going according to plan," said Milton. "And we hope to have it running by the spring of 2014."
