Residents worried about Ellis bike lanes
People concerned about proposed bike lanes on Ellis Street in Penticton are expected to speak their minds at tonight's, Monday, council meeting.
Resident Rick Valenti will give the presentation on behalf of those who live on the street and business owners.
Valenti says they don't have problems with bike riding in the city, it's the loss of 68 parking spots that is cause for concern.
"We are just asking the city for a solution as taxpayers," he said. "We feel a bike lane is not an improvement when it hurts businesses and home owners."
Valenti said business owners and residents are also worried about a loss of parking spaces on Vancouver Hill.
The city has been proposing a bike network designed to increase safety and increase bicycle use in the city.
An open house on the matter was held in October. It was at that meeting that Ellis Street residents first spoke up about bike lanes running along Ellis from Wade Avenue north to Vancouver Avenue.
Other items on the agenda are a presentation by the Penticton Curling Club, the award of a design contract for the Penticton Creek restoration, the energy retrofit loan program update, electrical rates, fees and charges related to the cemetery and the council meeting schedule for 2014.
