Brush fire hits close to home

Video by Skylar noe-vack.

Gusting winds fanned a brush fire in Penticton Saturday afternoon, with flames moving towards homes when the fire department arrived. Witnesses say the fire department extinguished the fire before it could cause any damage.

The fire was in heavy brush beside a subdivision near Dartmouth Drive and Greenwood Drive.

The fire made its way right up to the back fence of David Doherty's property. It was so close he could see the flames.

"(The) Fire dept was there pretty fast and did a great job of knocking it down. It was definitely not a burn pile. We believe it was probably caused by three young teens that we had seen down there 20 minutes before the fire was at our fence, but we didn't actually see what started it. Glad no one was hurt though."

The fire department says they had 11 members working on the fire. It was on very steep terrain, but their team was able to hit it with foam. After 90 minutes they had it mopped up. The cause is undetermined.

Skylar noe-vack says, "A large plume of grey smoke was visible as I got out of Walmart this afternoon around 1:45 p.m. Saturday."
