Apex to open this weekend
Skiers and snowboarders eager to carve turns at Apex Mountain Resort will get to do so this weekend.
The ski area, near Penticton, is slated to open on Saturday, Dec. 7, but on a somewhat limited basis, initially.
"We are feeling good, and we have a nice solid base, but Mother Nature is playing with us a little bit," said General Manager James Shalman. "Still the last four seasons have been amazing and we are on track for another great season."
In recent days, temperatures have been quite cold, at -20 C, so for now management wants to keep people on the lower half of the mountain.
Drainage ditches also need a bit more snow coverage to make it safer.
What will be open is the T-Bar and Magic Carpet beginner area, providing access to four runs.
Because Apex is not fully open yet, there will be 50 per cent off all lift tickets.
All mountain businesses, including restaurants and accommodations, are also up and running.
By next weekend, more terrain and chairlfits are expected to open.
Adding to the excitement is the Olympic aerial teams from Canada, Russia and Japan and about 200 mogul athletes of all ability levels have been training at the ski area.
