Cops out in force Dec. 7
RCMP in Penticton and across the country will be out in force Saturday conducting random sobriety road checks.
Along with being in the middle of the holiday Counter Attack program, Dec 7 is also National Impaired Enforcement Day across the country.
Penticton RCMP Cpl, Ted Manchulenko says getting home safe should be a top priority for motorists.
"In an average year, 95 people die in motor vehicle crashed involving impaired driving and driving impaired remains as one of the top three contributing causes for fatal car crashes," says Manchulenko.
"Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injuries that have immense costs and devastating effects on our communities."
In 2013, police in Penticton have issued 104 Immediate Roadside Prohibitions for impaired driving compared with 108 a year ago.
"If you are planning on drinking, please do not drive," says Manchulenko.
"By finding an alternative way home such as public transit, cabs or a designated driver you can help ensure that you, and the people sharing the road with you get home safely."
Manchulenko also reminds motorists to drive to be aware of changing conditions on the roads.
Although local roads have been clear and dry for the most part the weather can change very quickly and even a short trip can lead you into severe winter conditions.
"Please make sure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter driving and that you have extra clothing and supplies such as a cell phone and charger, food and water in the event you become stranded due to weather or a vehicle emergency."
