Regional award for treatment plant

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen's Wastewater Treatment Plant has received a regional award for its environmental impact.
The Okanagan Falls-based facility was honoured with a Green Award from the Southern Interior Construction Association.
"It was a surprise and an honour to accept the award on behalf of the regional district ," said Liisa Bloomfield, engineer for the district, who has played a pivotal role in the facility's development and construction.
The facility, which has drastically reduced waste treatment odours, was cited for its impact on the Okanagan Falls community and the surrounding environment.
It replaced an older plant and allows the regional district to keep pace with rigorously evolving environmental standards and provide for increased residential and industrial growth in the Okanagan Falls area.
The facility includes a number of environmentally friendly features, including using treated effluent for water maintenance functions and landscape irrigation, heating and cooling systems and for flushing of toilets.
The facility's thermally modified timber siding was harvested from pine beetle-infested lumber.
