Zombies invade downtown Penticton
Oct 31, 2013 / 7:16 pm
The walking dead staggered down Penticton's Main Street on Halloween, before gathering on Front Street to mingle and listen to music.
The rotting corpses were participants in the first annual Zombie Walk and Costume Parade held by the Downtown Penticton Association.
"We see the downtown as the heart of the community," said Kerri Milton, executive director of the association/aka The White Queen. "So we want a lot of people here and what is more fun than dressing up."
Around 200 people showed up for the walk that started as the light began to fade at Nanaimo Square and ended on Front Street.
People were invited to dress up as the undead or in costumes of their choosing, and there were plenty of angels, fairies, witches and clowns in the crowd.
Penticton resident Bernie Berger, who always takes Halloween off because it is such a fun day, was transformed into Ironman Volunteer Zombie.
"I love "The Walking Dead," the TV show, so when I heard there was going to be a zombie walk in my city I wanted to come out," he said.
Katiie Celli said she recently moved back to the city and was glad to see a celebration of this type.
"I'm a horror movie fanatic and I pretty much like everything about zombies, because they are something that comes back from the dead and no one can really explain why," she said.
Sharing in the fun, was a last minute decision for Alana Wheeler.
"I did the makeup this morning to scare my kids and someone said you should go to the walk," she said. "I think this is great. Vancouver has one that is amazing, so it's absolutely good for Penticton as well."
At the end of the thrill-filled walk, people were treated to face painting, a musical performance by Mat Duffus and a costume contest.
Special prizes also went out to the best dog costume.
"I love this," said Laurel Burnham, the market and events coordinator for the association. "It's an opportunity to celebrate our community and our diversity."
