Liquor policy discussed in Penticton
Oct 29, 2013 / 5:00 am
Parliamentary secretary for liquor reform John Yap, was in the Penticton area Monday to get more feedback for the review of BC's liquor laws.
Along the way he stopped at liquor stores, as well as at Poplar Grove Winery to speak to stakeholders in the wine industry.
"This region, the heart of wine country, is a very important economic driver," he said, before talking to wine industry representatives at the winery.
The goal of the BC Liquor Policy Review, which Yap is leading, is to identify balanced, common-sense solutions that improve consumer convenience and grow BC's economy while ensuring public health and safety.
Yap has travelled the province getting ideas. People are also invited to submit ideas and comments to the policy review website at engage.gov.bc.ca/liquorpolicyreview.
Concerns he has heard during the process are "why can't I pick up a bottle of wine when I go to a corner store, or how is it I can take my kids to a hockey arena, but I can't take them to a neighbourhood pub."
"We are looking with this review to get a read on the attitudes of British Columbians, to get a sense of what British Columbians will support," said Yap.
In addition to getting feedback from people through social media and other means, Yap has spent considerable time talking to law enforcement.
Most recently, he did a ride along with the Vancouver Police Department during their nightly patrols of the Granville entertainment district to see firsthand what they deal with in the area.
His thoughts on this and other feedback and experiences is included in his blog related to liquor reform on the website.
The process ends Oct. 31. Yap's blog will close the morning of Nov. 1, 2013.
A final report will be presented to Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton by Nov. 25.
