Theft from cars rampant in Oliver
Oct 24, 2013 / 5:00 am
The Oliver RCMP are asking people to lock their vehicles and put valuables out of sight, after a recent spate of thefts from cars.
On Oct.18, a resident reported his unlocked vehicle in the 5900 block of Okanagan Street was rummaged through and items including a tennis bag, several tennis rackets and a pair of sunglasses were taken.
On Oct. 21, a resident in the 5800 block of Okanagan Street contacted the Oliver detachment to report her unlocked vehicle was rummaged through overnight, with a binder containing keys stolen.
The same day, the detachment received a report of theft from a car in the 5000 block of Nicola Street. The complainant stated their vehicle was entered through the unlocked hatchback. The roof light was broken off, but nothing of value was taken.
In yet another incident, Oct. 21, the detachment received a report of an attempted theft from a vehicle parked on the 400 block of Skagit Avenue. The owner advised that his car stereo was partially removed from the dash and was laying on the seat.
Numerous other unlocked vehicles were entered overnight.
In addition to the many reports, a recent interview with a young offender revealed that when he is car hopping, he is looking for vehicles that are not locked, say police.
In a separate matter, the building under construction in the 300 block of McKinney Road has been identified as becoming a magnet for transients.
The Oliver public is asked to watch out for any suspicious activity and report it directly to the RCMP.
