Scratching the surface of the KVR Trail
Oct 19, 2013 / 5:00 am
Resurfacing work on the section of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail between Arawana Road and the Little Tunnel in Naramata is now complete.
The effort, a provincial project managed by the Regional District Okanagan Similkameen, took about a week to do, and so far the response has been positive, said RDOS Naramata director Karla Kozakevich.
"People biking are really enjoying it, and it's much nicer for walkers, without the uneven surface," she said.
The project was done using a recycled asphalt and aggregate mix, similar to the product used on the trail from Arawana south to Penticton in recent years.
During the construction, the trail was closed to vehicles and motorized traffic. It has since reopened.
The question now, is what's next for passenger vehicle access on the much-used trail.
The issue came up at a heated meeting in Naramata in September of 2012, where a plan was laid out by the BC government including trail use designations, motorized opportunity development and KVR trail development.
The thought of losing passenger vehicle access to the Little Tunnel, Big Tunnel, Rock Ovens Park , power lines roads and Elinor Forest Service Road, did not sit well with many Naramata residents.
A group titled Keep Our KVR Accessible to All, (KOKATA) was subsequently formed. They met with government officials and a trail committee, comprised of local users, this year.
RDOS and government officials were unavailable for comment.
But according to Gary Dicken, a spokesman for KOKATA, his understanding is they are still examining options for passenger vehicles from Glenfir or through crown land off north Narmata Road.
"They are now conducting a feasibility study on the access from Glenfir, and we are awaiting the results of that study," he said.
As for the resurfacing, Dicken said it's great.
"It's fine. We don't oppose the formation of the trail," he said. "What we want is to see access by passenger vehicles to key points."
