Penticton and South Okanagan
Drive-thru breakfast well attended
Oct 17, 2013 / 7:51 pm
Mayor Garry Litke greeted early arrivals, Penticton Vees members shined car windows and a team of volunteers made sure everything else was taken care of at the United Way Drive Thru Breakfast Thursday.
At the end of the busy morning at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, over $11,500 was raised, with a large check in the amount of $5,400 contributed by Skaha Ford and Penticton Kia.
"This is a fun, easy to participate in, high energy event that harnesses a lot of good will from sponsors and the community," said Marla O'Brien, the executive director of the United Way of the Central and South Okanagan/Similkameen.
The event, in its second year, was started up by hotel general manager David Prystay in partnership with the United Way, after seeing how successful the drive thru breakfast held at the Ramada Hotel in Kelowna was.
"We thought we would do the same thing here to help out local charities," he said. "The first year exceeded our expectations, so we hope this year does as well."
Last year, all of the 550 breakfast bags were purchased before 8:30 a.m. and just under $8,000 was raised for local community impact programs and services
This year, there was well over 750 breakfast bags available, valued well over $100 each.
"I come out every year, because the United Way does so much to support the community," said Kelli Melo, as she drove through picking up goodies. "My aunt is very involved in the Kelowna version of this, and I am very glad it was started here."
