Wind power projects supported by RDOS

The Regional District Okanagan Similkameen board's support for two wind power projects in the Okanagan are among items on this week's meeting agenda.
It was moved and seconded at the board's last meeting that the RDOS advise FrontCounter BC that the proposed Summerland Wind Power Project and Shinish Creek Wind Power Project are supported.
And in addition that a new set of regulations related to height exceptions, noise, environmental and other public considerations and watershed impacts be prepared for inclusion in Regional District Zoning Bylaws and that this be brought forward for consideration at a future meeting of the Planning and Development Committee.
"So far the board has said yes we support this particular development , which is very remote and logged," said development services manager Donna Butler. "But we would like to maintain some control, so in the future the board can veto it, if it's in an area that is not so remote."
Concerns were raised by Tom Siddon, the RDOS director for Okanagan Falls-Kaleden, at the last meeting that these projects have grown too big in other places, leading to complaints from the public.
The RDOS recently received two separate referrals from FrontCounter BC regarding the development of 14 wind turbines and associated structures, transmission lines and road accesses, by Zero Emission Energy Developments.
The Shinish Creek project involves the development of seven turbines in Electoral Areas G and H, with an installed capacity of 15 megawatts, and the Summerland project involves the development of seven turbines in Electoral Areas F, G and H, with an installed capacity of 15 MW.
The area under application is comprised of un-surveyed crown land, approximately 10 km southeast of Osprey Lake and 32 km west of Summerland.
