Soupateria to serve more than soup
Oct 12, 2013 / 5:00 am
Penticton's Soupateria is again gearing up to serve a big crowd on Thanksgiving Day.
Volunteers expect as many as 140 people to show up Monday for the special sit down dinner at the Soupateria on Orchard Avenue.
"We make it a special day. We decorate with flower arrangements and they are served at the table," said past president Lauraine Bailie, as she handed out meals on a recent busy day. "And I know they look forward to it."
Patrons can expect to dine on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, dressing and desserts at the dinner.
There will be plenty of volunteers on hand to make it a memorable day and no one will be turned away.
Started in 1986 to provide hot meals to those in need, the Soupateria continues to offer food 365 days a year.
Bailie said she sees the need for services of this type, grow every year.
"When I started volunteering in 1996, we mainly looked after men in their mid-40s without marketable skills," she said. "But now we see a cross section of men, women, young families, pensioners and transient fruit pickers."
A big reason behind the growing need is the cost for housing, food and utilities keeps going up, while pensions remain the same.
For example, a person on disability getting $700 a month is going to be hard pressed to find a place to live at less than $800, said Bailie.
While young families who turn up are still being impacted by the downturn in the economy.
"I believe if we weren't here, there would be a lot of hungry people in this city," she said.
Dan Felski said he was looking forward to the Thanksgiving meal, after eating lunch there with a friend this week.
"I don't know how they pull it off," he said. "And I am very grateful, because there are a lot of people in this community who can't feed themselves."
The Soupateria is open from 11:30 to 12:30 seven days a week. The sit down Thanksgiving dinner is from 11:30 to 12:30, Monday.
