Public invited to name baby donkey
Oct 10, 2013 / 9:18 pm
The public is invited to name a girl donkey, recently born at a petting zoo in Penticton, all for a good cause.
The Name the Baby Donkey Contest is currently being offered by Andy's Animal Acres, with all proceeds going to MexCan Pet Partners dog rescue in Mexico, www.mex-can.org.
"I worked at Maplewood Farm in North Vancouver for 10 years and we had a donkey contest," said Andrea Buyan, owner of Andy's. "It sort of allowed everyone to come in with a name for an animal born on a farm, and kids always enjoy coming up with animal names."
The affectionate four-legged creature in need of a name came into the world on Sept. 23. Her mother Willow has been at the petting zoo for about four months and was pregnant when Buyan got her.
"We woke up Monday morning and there she was," she said.
Entries must be received at the farm on Three Mile Road in Penticton and cost $1 each. People can drop by the names from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., this weekend and next.
The name will be chosen at the 101 Pumpkins Event at the farm on Oct. 20, and the winning name creator will receive a 2014 family pass to the petting zoo.
The family is familiar with the dog rescue organization in Mexico, because the owner helped them bring a dog they found in the country out.
The proceeds will be delivered by Buyan's daughter when she goes to assist in a dog rescue in November.
For the first annual 101 Pumpkin Event, people are are invited to come in their Halloween costumes and join in activities including carving their own pumpkins and bobbing for apples.
Admission is $7. The farm's last public day for the season is Oct. 20.
