In Canada, we pride ourselves on our climatic toughness. We like to trade stories of the worst winters and compare the endurance we have against those from other cities. Did you know the corner of Portage and Main in Winnipeg is the windiest street corner...

With Mother’s Day approaching this Sunday, I was remembering times with my Mom and thinking of all the things I loved. I will admit here that I was most fortunate as my Mom loved being a Mom and she was able to stay home while my brother and I were...

I have been looking at the garden seed catalogues trying to plan out what we will grow this year in our wonderful garden, but it seems every year the dilemma of deciding becomes more difficult. It is bad enough I have to choose between beets and turnips or decide whether the extra space at the...

May 1st has long been known as a day of celebration throughout much of Europe. “May Day” as it is sometimes called, represents the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. In ancient times it was known as the first day of summer, the festival of the goddess of...

Sunday is Earth Day. I know we just had Earth Hour, and you just did spring cleaning and recycled and you’re feeling like it never quits… well, you’re right, it doesn’t. We are the stewards of this place, and just like the dust...

Whichever way you like your coffee, enjoy the time away from the hustle and bustle as you sip.
I’m the sort of person that is always curious about how things started, or who had the original idea for an iconic symbol or trend. One pastime...

Well, here we are, already at Easter. It’s good to know that spring is under way, and I feel like it’s time to celebrate and let loose. I watch my dogs get spring scents in their nostrils and their tails perk up, like they have...

April Fool’s Day is coming up this week, and so I thought I would use that as inspiration to be a bit goofy. Perhaps that is in part due to spring seeming to be ahead of itself this year, what with Easter coming and the weather being so topsy-turvy – snow in the morning...

Okay, it’s official. The pussywillows are out, the grass is getting greener and soon the Easter Bunny will hopping down the trail. Snowy mornings frustrate us because now we have itchy feet and want it all to explode into the full wonder of what...

Everyone in the Okanagan has itchy feet, with all this warmer weather and things sprouting up green all over. It’s hard to believe that spring doesn’t officially arrive until March 20th. We are fortunate to live in Paradise, aren’t...

We talked last week about the idea of food snobs and how the youth of today might be spoiled with all the exotic fusion fare and specialty artisanal products. It seems that perhaps we are just experiencing an evolution. That got me to thinking about the difference between hip...

I read an article recently in the New York Times that mentioned university students are now checking out the quality of the cafeteria as another way to decide which campus to attend. I know I am getting older when I read that and remember...

If you are a regular reader of this column, you know that we are big movie fans. Going to a movie once a week is our “date night”. Both of us spent time working in movie catering too, so we have seen the “smoke and mirrors” it takes to weave the magic on screen. There is...

Isn’t it interesting that the day proceeding the start of Lent is seen in some places as an all-out binge, as if to signify that one should load up to make sure that there are minimal regrets whilst one is supposed to abstain from those excesses in life? Or perhaps the idea was to give you...

Okay, I suppose this week’s title is less than subtle, but what do you expect for the most commercialized festive occasion of them all? Valentine’s Day falls in a season full of festivities, with Mardi Gras and Chinese new Year...

I know, you can all hardly wait, as it has finally arrived and soon we will be able to celebrate with the usual food and drink that accompanies the whole event…

The thermometer is telling us we are in the dead of winter. Perhaps it was the void created after the decadence of Christmas, or maybe it was me thinking of dancing penguins and that expanse of polar ice cap, but any way you look at it, we are...

In a world where everything has to be sensational to be noticed, it seems food has fallen prey to that same philosophy. So, to ensure that you can all keep up at the company water cooler, I thought I should let you know of some of the latest news. Prepare to be amazed.
Perhaps the...

"Wikipedia lists a gourmand as a person who takes great pleasure in food. I have taken the concept of gourmandise, or enjoying something to the fullest, in all parts of my life. I love to grow and cook food, and I loved wine enough to become a Sommelier. I call a meal a success when I can convey that "sense of place" from where the food has come... the French call that terroir, but I just call it the full experience. It might mean tasting the flavours of my own garden, or transporting everyone at the table to a faraway place, reminiscent of travels or dreams we have had.
Happy Gourmand is about enjoying life and living in the moment; sharing that joy with others is how I keep those good vibes going!"
