West Kelowna’s Danny Watkins has been featured in an in-depth si.com story by Peter King.
Watkins, a volunteer firefighter while still attending Mt. Boucherie Secondary School (2002), was encouraged by friends and co-workers at the West Kelowna Fire Department to attend Butte College in California if he was serious about becoming a fulltime employee.
Two weeks before Butte’s season began, the school’s football coach invited the 22-year-old freshman into his office. He explained how football might pave the road to a four-year college, or at the very least help him assimilate to Butte’s campus life.
