Kate Aguiar of West Kelowna and the Liquid Lightning Swim Club runs to the finish line at Hot Sand Beach on the way to a first place finish among the female swimmers in the Interior Savings Across The Lake Swim.
Josh Zakala’s forte is swimming, but it took a 15 metre dash from the shoreline to the finish line for the 16-year-old to win the Interior Savings Across The Lake Swim on Saturday.
Zakala and defending champion Jon Bird emerged from Okanagan Lake at the same time after their gruelling 2.1-kilometre swim, but Zakala outran the older Bird along Hot Sands beach to the official finish.
A strong current — from south to north — forced about 200 of the 740 swimmers to be pulled from the water after 2 1/2 hours. And it also played havoc with even the strongest swimmers as the winning time of 28:49 was well off the record of 20:49 set by Kelowna’s Roland Bauhart in 1997.
