Business Spotlight

Castanet is introducing a Business Spotlight to feature Okanagan businesses, and Candice Johnson Photography is our first business! We asked her these questions...

How long have you been a photographer?
Candice Johnson PhotographyMy love for photography started in high school. I took a few courses and absolutely loved it! It wasn't till I graduated that I got my first film SLR. There was a lot of trial and error and a lot of time spent with my uncle (a photographer) trying to master this art! When I found out I was pregnant a few years later, I decided it was a perfect time to upgrade to the digital world!! I haven't looked back since! It was at this point that I started doing photos for friends and family. I found my passion! I was doing it for free because to me it was just fun, a way to express my creativity and show life from my point of view. People started to comment on my work and started asking "how much do you charge?" This was when it hit me..... "Hey, I could make money doing this!"

I did my first wedding that winter and came home BEAMING! My passion was being confirmed with every photo session I did. In 2010 I decided it was time to put my work out there and hoped for a good response. I made up a website and got my business rolling. It was a success!!! To this day I seem to get busier and busier with every season that passes. And I couldn't be happier!

Through all of this my husband has been at my side encouraging me every step of the way. Without him I truly believe I would not be where I am today. He has helped me to believe in myself and to believe that I have what it takes to do what I love and make a business out of it at the same time.

What type of photography do you do?

Engagement, wedding, maternity, newborn, children, family, daycare/preschool, portraits, graduation, and open to other ideas as well.

What ties you to the Okanagan?

Candice Johnson PhotographyI was born and raised here in Kelowna and LOVE it here for many reasons. It is a photographers paradise! Everywhere you look is another great place to take photos. The lake, the mountains, the wineries, even if you head down some back road you will be sure to come across another great locations. I have done most of my photography here in the Okanagan with exceptions of close by towns like Vernon and Penticton. In this upcoming wedding season I will be traveling to Cancun, Mexico to photograph my first destination wedding. I am very excited and hope to be able to travel more in the future.

Why do you love being a photographer?

Being a photographer is a very rewarding job. Not only do I get to create, play and have fun but I also get to freeze time...I get to take the birth of a new precious baby, the vows said between two people deeply in love or a bond between a family and freeze it! There are so many times in a day when I look at my kids and wish time would slow down if not stop. I know it sounds a bit corny but its true! And I have one of the few jobs that allows me to take those moments that you won't get back and freeze them so you can have them for a lifetime. I find this very rewarding!
