Alleged jewelry thief in custody
The Kamloops RCMP have a 24-year-old Lillooet man in custody and have recovered a portion of the jewelry stolen when thieves broke into a home on Fernie Place and ransacked the premise sometime between 5:00 and 10:00 PM January 25.
Two men attended a precious metal exchange business on Victoria St. around 1:15 PM today and had just pawned the jewelry and were on their way out of the store when the home owner came into the business. She immediately recognized the jewelry as hers. Both males fled the scene on foot before police were notified of the incident. The two suspects were described as being clean cut, thinly built teenage native males with spiked hair. One male was said to be taller than the other.
One suspect was arrested a short time later when a patrol officer spotted him at a north shore Money Mart where he was attempting to negotiate the cheque that he had received for pawning the jewelry.
The suspect was returned to the RCMP where he was processed and is expected to be released from custody on promissory documents pending a future court date. Charges of possession of stolen property are being recommended.
The investigation into the residential break in and jewelry theft is still ongoing as is the search for the second suspect.
Anyone with information about this theft or the location of the stolen property is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP or Crimestoppers.
