Straight goods on Lumby's Oval Park
On Wednesday morning, October 17, Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development; Eric Foster, MLA Vernon Monashee; and Village of Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton busted out their golden shovels and broke ground on the new Oval Park Recreation Enhancements Project.
The project includes construction of a re-circulating spray park and an outdoor fitness equipment park.
The new facilities are the result of a Community Recreation Program grant of the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development worth $348,000.
The grant is part of a $30 million provincial program, aimed at helping smaller communities by adjusting provincial contribution from 33 per cent up to 80 per cent.
“Smaller communities are really challenged sometimes when you got a third-third-third project,” says Bennett.
“It’s always a third from the province, a third from the federal government and a third from the communities.”
Local Lumby organization Teddy’s Devils and Martin’s Angels, responsible for Lumby’s Sunshine Coach, initially purposed the plan and contributed $30,000 toward the project.
The local Lions Club also raised $30,000 toward the new facilities.
“I want to acknowledge the hard work done by Ted and Marg (Luszcz) and Sherry (Kineshanko) on this and Don Clark from the Lion’s Club,” says Foster.
“Thank them very much for their work and contributions to the community as always and their commitment to this project.”
Bennett also offered his praise to the fundraising efforts of the three organizations.
“I don’t think I’ve encountered a project that really captures the community element of what we’re trying to do any better than what you have here in Lumby.”
Mayor Acton says the project will be ready for Summer 2013.
