Applying Feng Shui to your home search is a smart investment, which can provide you with peace of mind during an often uncertain time.

The elements of Feng Shui are an ancient art and science, developed in China over 3,000 years ago. Literally, Feng can be translated to wind and Shui to water. Together, they make up a complex body of knowledge that describes how a balance of energies within a given space can assure good fortune and health to those within in. So how can we utilize this ancient art into the modern day home buying process?

Begin with the heart and hub, the threshold of the house. A strong entrance provides the gateway for good chi to enter a home.  The front door, as well as the pathway leading to it, should be proportionally accurate to the size of the home itself. Often, something as simple as adjustments in landscaping can help create a sense of balanced Feng Shui.

Once you have established a solid pathway for Feng Shui to enter the home, make sure you can keep it there. The location of every door in the home is equally important. Avoid a house with any direct door alignment, meaning two doors located directly across from one another. Direct door alignment can result in a strong rush of chi, and a loss of good energy.

Similar to door alignment, there are a few other potential bad Feng Shui setups to be avoided in the front entryway of the home. What do you see as soon as you come into the house? Do you face an unappealing wall, stairway, bath or closet door? Remember that unless you plan to renovate, this will be the first view you and your visitors get of your home for many years to come.

The most obvious and often subjective aspect of Feng Shui in the home is its floor plan. Utilize your personal tastes in deciding the ideal location for every room. Are you looking for an open-concept living space? Are the bedrooms located an appropriate distance from the kitchen and living rooms? The Feng Shui rules regarding a home’s overall floor plan are far more relaxed, and allow for more individual choices. It’s all about deciding what’s best for you and your family.
