Staff hikes reversed for political aides

The BC Liberals deservingly fell under siege for raising staff wages during a tough time. Premier Clark’s decision to reverse the increases in staff wages demonstrated accountability and sound judgement.

Many senior staff members’ wages (which have been frozen since 2006) were going to rise from $94,500 to $105,000. According to the Bank of Canada’s Inflation Calculator, $94,500 in 2006 is equal to $106,182 in 2013. However, salary increases in an economy where we’re asking all citizens to live within their means was not right. This was a mistake.

Every government and politician makes mistakes. I’m personally willing to accept their mistakes if they’re willing to be rational, transparent, and receptive to public opinion. A trademark of strong leadership is the ability to abandon egos and pride (easier said than done), and this decision required just that. In fact, I don’t think there is an arrogant bone in Christy’s body.

I see many admirable qualities in Christy. She is frank; she makes tough decisions; she is a fun, outgoing, happy person. She has a wonderful ability to engage with and relate to us average British Columbians because she is a good listener (an underrated quality in politicians).

Premier Clark’s leadership on this controversy impressed me. Prime Minister Harper should take notes.
