Election Rules On The Road

It seems the campaign signs lining the roads are making already horrendous Kelowna drivers much more dangerous behind the wheel, and are giving the rest of us some new obstacles to watch out for - namely, flying signs.

I was almost hit by one while riding down Hwy 97. Had it struck me, I may have been knocked off my motorcycle, or been in an MVA. It was a windy day, and the sign detached from its stake and was flying around the highway. I have had to maneuverer around numerous other signs scattered along the highway on calm days as well. What a nuisance.

Then, as if it is not bad enough to have these silly campaign signs as a distraction, plastered along the road ways, I’ve been seeing groups of supporters clustered by the roadside, calling out and waving their party’s signs in an effort to take drivers eyes OFF the road.

Since stupidity begets stupidity, you then have the drivers who slow down, on a busy highway, in order to scream out obscenities to the roadside campaigners, which no one can hear anyway due to the noise of car engines and horns... oh, and the squealing of tires as traffic up the rear slam the brakes to avoid hitting the stopped car.

Has anyone done any stats on this? I wonder if records show an increase in minor fender benders during electoral campaigns.

Bottom line: who am I going to vote for in a couple of weeks? The party with the least amount of campaign signs!
