Letters to the editor

Trying to make ends meet

To the editor:

I am one of the people hit very hard by Mr. Harper's Government.

I have been disabled since 1991 and contributed to the CPP and many other programs to ensure a “livable” living for myself in my retirement years.

I did not “intend” to become too ill to work, had never collected welfare or unemployment insurance and was very distraught to accept that I could no longer work.

I started working full time in Canada when I was 17 years old, worked hard until the very day the doctors told me I would never be able to contribute to any work environment again.

I actually had to go to counselling to accept that fact.

Since Mr. Harper has been in power the first year I received $1.53 cost of living raise per month.

The 2nd year I received a $3.14 cost of living raise.

Now I am living in abject poverty and squalor because most services for disabled people have been taken away and I actually have to rely on the Food Bank to make ends meet.

What was your cost-of-living increase this year Mr. Harper?
