Pension reform a little late |
|
|
To the editor:
It was recently "accidentally" leaked that the next omnibus budget bill from the Harper Government will include legislation on 'watering-down' MP pensions.
But wait, not now, not for all current sitting MP's, only for future MP's, you can't touch the 'old boys' pensions.
Earning 'brownie points' off the backs of others while protecting your own interests is more commonly known as being selfish.
It's not like Mr. Harper can't afford to 'water-down' his own pension.
According to a recent Huffington Post report, Mr. Harper, if he retires in 2019 and collects until he is 80, is slated to earn an estimated pension of $5,596,474 (yes, you read that right).
Jason Kenney is a distant second, slated to earn a meagre $4,318,507.
With the MP's wage freeze set to expire next year, it appears that the our current MP's, of all stripes, are happy to take everything they can from the trough while they have time, all the while preaching restraint to the rest of us.
Cutting someone else's pension is easy, cutting your own pension takes guts.
Perhaps their mantra should be "We'll do the right thing..... later, when it doesn't affect us."
