Faint hope for convicted killers |

To the editor:
Upon reading the news about the parole hearing for David Shearing (now David Ennis), I can only shake my head.
What is wrong with our legal system?
Why wasn’t this man declared a Dangerous Offender thereby making him unable to apply for parole?
Not only has he been allowed to marry while in prison but he is allowed to change his name so that in the event that he is allowed parole he will be able to move quietly into another poor unsuspecting community.
Why must the Johnson & Bentley families be put through this anguish every two years?
We don’t have the death penalty in Canada and the maximum sentence that can be given is life.
In my opinion it should be exactly that, life with no parole and the rest of your life behind bars.
I also read just recently about a Calgary man who is currently on death row in the States as the result of his conviction for murdering two young men several years ago in Montana.
Apparently his family has been trying to have him returned to Canada to have his sentence served here, not surprising as he too will probably be eligible for parole immediately upon his arrival in Canada.
Apparently there has been some light shed in his direction, an American Judge recently ruled that death by lethal injection is cruel and inhumane.
I was wondering how humanely the accused killed his victims.
