Letters to the editor

Transit rider left out in the cold

To the editor:

Open Letter to Westbank Mayor, council, and who ever else that is in charge of BC Transit:

I understand that it took a lot to decide how the 21 Glenrosa Bus Route would run, and that it was a difficult decision and that BC Transit scheduling staff and the transit operator are aware of the negative impact on us who use the bus on a daily basis.

I don't think that any of those involved with the decisions on our route understand fully the negative impact it has not only on my family but a lot more people who live in Glenrosa.

My maternity ends as of September 22. To return to work, I need a bus that comes up to Glenrosa after 11 p.m. at night, and after 6 p.m. on Sundays.

This is no longer available to me, so now I will either have to spend $23.75 a night on cab fair, or walk the 1 and a half hour to get home every night.

My husband depended on the 5:47 a.m. 21 bus every morning to get to work on time, now he has to wait till after 6 a.m. to get a bus, making him late for work.

No one drives in my household because paying the $120 a month it costs for our bus passes was way cheaper then owning a car. I now have to go get my license and buy a car just to be able to work.

My sister depended on the 10:43 p.m. 21 bus in evening that went on Louie Drive, to get home in Glenrosa as well.

Now I could go on and on about this but I know my voice isn't going to mean a lot to any of you.

So my question is, who is going to pay for my nightly cab fair?

Because to tell you the truth it is not safe to walk alone at night and I do not feel comfortable walking alone.

The $40.00 it costs my husband to get to work everyday? That's $1,275 a month. What is the point of me going back to work if all my paychecks go towards taxi fair so my husband and I can work?

Also, this does not include the childcare of 3 hours a day that I need for an infant and 8 year old, rent or anything thing else.

So the negative impact that you guys have tried to minimize has just put yet another family in debt, because living off of one income is not possible in the Okanagan.

Plus the numerous amounts of other people who you all basically screwed because other areas, such as Kelowna needed more runs.

Maybe its time to hire people who actually know what they are doing.
