Proclamations about free speech |

To the editor:
I am writing in response to the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada’s (AARC) demand that our Mayor, Walter Gray, remove the Kelowna Right to Life Society’s request for a declaration that the last week of September is “Protect Human Life Week”.
As we all know, the City has allowed Proclamations for many different organizations, including Gays and Lesbians. Many residents of Kelowna do not agree with the Gay and Lesbian lifestyle, however that particular group has been extended the privilege to proclaim their message openly.
The Kelowna Right to Life Society has a very different message, but that does not mean we should stifle its right to Freedom of Speech.
The Kelowna Right to Life Society is not “radical” in any way.
The organization is made up of many mainstream members of our Kelowna Community who care for human life from conception to natural death.
When has that view ever been a crime or a radically held belief? The society promotes and celebrates life at all stages.
The Kelowna Right to Life Society may have a fundamentally different opinion than the AARC on the sanctity of life in the womb, but that does not mean that they should be silenced.
The City of Kelowna has allowed members of it’s community to proclaim various messages during different times of the year.
That privilege of proclamation does not suggest the City of Kelowna endorses any particular group, as each group is offered equal opportunity regardless of race, creed, gender, or colour.
What we’re seeing by the AARC is a bully tactic to silence the voices of other Canadians who disagree with them.
Our forefathers fought and died so that we can be free from such harassment. Let us not relinquish that gift so easily.
I am a proud member and sponsor of the Kelowna Right to Life Society. |
