Vigilante justice justified?

To the editor:

Re: Hit and run leads to vigilante justice

I am not surprised by the actions of witnesses or a single witness that felt the need to administer their own penalty to this suspected drunk driver.

Vigilante justice is obviously a topic that creates a dividing line between the citizens of this country as well as many others with a failing law enforcement system, coupled with a failing judicial system.

Although I can certainly understand and see the points made by those who do not support or condone this type of action from our fellow citizens, I also see and understand the flip side to the coin.

I personally am more than slightly fed up with our failing system and must admit that I smiled a very broad smile as I read the report. I support what this person or these persons have done in this case, provided this driver was in fact drunk.

Unfortunately, it is time to take off the rose coloured glasses and see the negativity that is rapidly infiltrating our democracy.

I continue to see bad people doing bad things to good people, without repercussion.

We the people are allowing this to continue by not taking a stand against it and we the people are being duped into believing our system will protect us.

If our system did the job so many followers believe it does, there would not be a young girl in the hospital and two others traumatized by witnessing the events leading up to this story.

Far fewer people, young and old would be victims of such crimes if our society were not so pathetically complacent.

Until our elected officials take action and clean up both the enforcement agencies as well as the courts themselves, there will be common folks who feel a need to take matters into their own hands.

Until this manner of justice is shown to be getting “out of hand”, I cannot help but support the actions of this person or these people for taking a stand.
