All the fines in the article, "Unlawful cyclists to be given the gears," are fine except one glaring one.
As a motorist with two cyclists in the family, I cringe every time I see motorists ahead of me driving in the bike lane. I've told my kids to ride on the sidewalk to spare their lives.
In the fall, my son came home from RSS one day, saying a kid showed up in class with a bloodied hand because he'd been clipped by a motorist's side view mirror. The kid reported for class, then reported to the office before cleaning himself up and returning to class.
I would rather pay a fine than get a call to visit my son in the hospital morgue!
My kids wear helmets, been taught the rules of the road, don't ride after dark, and keep their hands on the handlebars at all times.
But I will not put their lives at risk.
Telling them to ride in the bike lane is akin to signing their death warrant in this town. I will not willingly put my children in danger.
