I am saddened by the brutal actions taken by our judicial system towards Mike Barre who is being charged with starting the McLure fire 2 summers ago. An honest man who actually admitted to making a mistake is being tarred, feathered and dragged off to jail for 5 years along with the threat of having to pay for the cost of putting out the fire. This idea is positively ridiculous.
The legal system doesn't treat this country's car thieves, pimps, murders, rapists....etc with half the punishment threatened to this regular guy who made a mistake and who readily admitted to it.
As for the money spent on putting out the fire, yes, 30 million dollars is big bucks but only a drop in the bucket compared to the money our government squanders. (i.e. Our governor general for example, if we did away with her position we would all be a little richer and could put out many fires)
It's unfortunate our legal system rewards the real criminals as they lie and cheat their way through the system, and punishes those who have morals and admit responsibility for their actions.
The legal actions toward Mr. Barre are not fair by any means but taken as an opportunity to use him as a whipping post for those individuals needing someone to blame.
We live in the Okanagan, the summers can be very dry therefore forest fires are a real threat.
Mike Barre, my prayers are with you.
